What Is Super Seven?
Super Seven — also known as Melody's Stone or Sacred Seven — is a rare mineral combination found in a single location in the Espirito Santo state of Brazil. It contains seven distinct minerals occurring together in one matrix:
- Amethyst: Purple quartz, colored by iron and irradiation
- Clear Quartz: Transparent silicon dioxide
- Smoky Quartz: Grey-brown quartz, colored by natural irradiation
- Cacoxenite: A yellow-orange iron aluminum phosphate mineral, appearing as golden needles or inclusions
- Rutile: Titanium dioxide, appearing as golden, red, or black needle-like inclusions
- Goethite: Iron oxyhydroxide, appearing as brown to black inclusions or phantoms
- Lepidocrocite: Another iron oxyhydroxide, appearing as red to orange inclusions
Not every Super Seven specimen contains all seven minerals in visible quantities — but all genuine Super Seven comes from the specific deposit in Espirito Santo where these seven minerals co-occur, and most specimens contain at least five of the seven.
The name "Melody's Stone" honors Melody, the author of the influential crystal reference book "Love Is In The Earth," who first described and named this mineral combination in the 1990s.
Geological Formation
Super Seven forms in a specific pegmatite environment in Espirito Santo, Brazil, where the geological conditions allowed an unusual combination of iron-bearing minerals to crystallize alongside quartz. The iron-bearing minerals (cacoxenite, rutile, goethite, lepidocrocite) formed as inclusions within the growing quartz matrix, while the quartz itself crystallized in both its amethyst (irradiated) and smoky (irradiated) varieties.
The specific combination of all seven minerals in one matrix is unique to this deposit. Similar individual minerals occur worldwide, but the co-occurrence of all seven in the proportions found in Espirito Santo Super Seven has not been replicated elsewhere.
Identifying the Seven Minerals
Amethyst
The purple coloration in Super Seven. May be pale lavender to deep purple. The amethyst component gives most Super Seven its characteristic purple-grey base color.
Clear Quartz
Transparent areas within the specimen. May appear as clear windows or zones within the more colored material.
Smoky Quartz
Grey to brown areas within the specimen. The smoky component often creates a warm, earthy undertone to the overall color.
Cacoxenite
The most visually distinctive inclusion — golden to yellow-orange needles or masses visible within the quartz. Cacoxenite is the rarest of the seven minerals and its presence in visible quantities significantly increases value.
Rutile
Golden, red, or black needle-like inclusions. May appear as fine golden threads or more substantial needles running through the quartz.
Goethite
Brown to black inclusions or phantom formations. May create ghost-like outlines within the crystal or appear as dark masses.
Lepidocrocite
Red to orange inclusions, often appearing as small flakes or masses. Creates warm red-orange highlights within the specimen.
Quality Grading
Mineral Diversity
The most important quality factor is the number and visibility of the seven minerals. Specimens showing all seven minerals in clearly identifiable quantities are the most valuable. Cacoxenite visibility is particularly prized — its golden needles are the most distinctive and rarest component.
Color Complexity
High-quality Super Seven shows a complex interplay of purple (amethyst), grey-brown (smoky quartz), golden (cacoxenite/rutile), and red-orange (lepidocrocite) — a rich, multi-tonal appearance unlike any single mineral. Specimens that appear simply as purple amethyst with minor inclusions are lower quality.
Clarity vs. Inclusion Balance
Unlike most gemstones where clarity is paramount, Super Seven's value comes from its inclusions. The ideal specimen has enough transparency to see the inclusions clearly, with a rich variety of inclusion types distributed throughout.
Formation Type
- Polished points and towers: The most common commercial form. Quality varies enormously.
- Raw specimens: Natural, unpolished material. Often shows the mineral combination more clearly than polished pieces.
- Tumbled stones: Accessible entry point. Look for visible cacoxenite and lepidocrocite.
- Clusters: Natural crystal clusters in Super Seven matrix. Rare and highly prized.
Metaphysical Properties
The following reflects spiritual traditions. See our editorial policy.
Super Seven is considered one of the most powerful stones in crystal traditions — its seven-mineral combination is said to carry the combined properties of all seven minerals simultaneously, creating a synergistic effect greater than any single component.
- Universal healing: Said to address all aspects of the self — physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual — simultaneously
- Psychic development: Associated with enhancing all psychic abilities — clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, and telepathy
- Spiritual evolution: Considered a stone of ascension — supporting the evolution of consciousness and spiritual development
- Cellular healing: Associated with healing at the cellular level, supporting the body's natural healing processes
- Collective consciousness: Said to maintain its connection to the collective energy of all Super Seven specimens worldwide — meaning every piece is energetically connected to every other piece
Super Seven is said to never need cleansing — its seven-mineral combination is considered self-cleansing and self-charging.
